#917 Put A Bow On It

How do you feel when someone gives you a gift and presents it in the bag from the store where they bought it? Like, let’s say, a shirt from Macy’s in the bag they brought it home from the store in. I mean, it’s nice to get a gift. It’s nice to be thought of, right? So why do you have that marginalized feeling when they hand the bag to you?

It’s like that with every presentation in every facet of our lives.

Imagine two contractors vying for that addition to your home; a six figure project. One hands you a form.  He has written in the price and some of the part numbers and brands, like Pella Windows and doors. The other offers you a folder with a quote, a list of materials, brochures describing the windows and doors, a referral page, and an implementation schedule. The first guy with the scratched out note may be a good builder, but I’ll never find out because I won’t hire him

The same rule applies to everyday conversations. I encounter a good many tactless or even rude people who claim they’re ‘Real” or “Authentic,” so they don’t “mince words” or “sugar coat” things. NONSENSE. That’s lazy communication

There is a difference between delivering that shirt in the Macy’s bag and stopping at the dollar store for a gift bag and a little tissue paper. The effort is negligible, but the difference is dramatic

That is one of the great secrets of charismatic people. They take a moment to imagine how their delivery will be received. They don’t change the message, but they take a minute to wrap it.
