#843 My 2019 Motto
I’m thinking about 2019. I know 2018 isn’t over yet, and I am still pushing to achieve some of what I set out to do this year, but I have started thinking about my 2019 motto. It may not seem like a big deal to you but ever since my cousin Steve turned me on to the idea of creating a motto for each year it has had a profound effect on me. I try to craft something for each year that resonates both internally and externally, meaning that the motto keeps me focused on something I want to be reminded of and that it offers some meaning to people who read it. This year, “Be nice. People like that”; managed to remind me to be my best self while striking a chord with people who read it. I embed the motto in my email signature, and I got a lot of comments back from people who told me it was a good reminder to them as well.
I guess it’s kind of silly but a new year feels like a whole new opportunity. We can undoubtedly create new mottos and set goals in March or October if we want to, can’t we? So what is it about a new year that feels fresh, and pregnant with opportunity and promise? We, humans, measure things in time and whether it’s a birth date, the day we quit a bad habit, a wedding anniversary or the years since D-Day or 9/11, we measure big things in years.
I’ve whittled my motto choices for 2019 down to my final three and will make a decision this week. If you have never done this, give it a shot. Think about the coming year and a motto that will serve you and others. It’s a beautiful introspection and may surprise you with the depth of effect it has on you and others.
If you like the idea of setting the tone for 2019, there is no better process than setting goals and creating a plan to achieve them.
