#1026 Who are You Speaking to?
Some people prefer to say yes and are rewarded with adventure. Some people like to say no and are rewarded with safety.
Who are you speaking with?
Some folks look for what’s wrong, like we are giving out a prize for finding it. Some folks agree out of hand with most things you say.
Who are you speaking to?
Some people over-explain like they were being paid by the word, while others hardly speak as if their lifelong allotment of words is about to run out.
Who are you speaking to?
Some people have just one way to get the point across and don’t consider their audience.
Some people pay close attention and adjust their tone, pace, body language, and words to facilitate conversation.
Some say that changing your way of speaking to match another is manipulative. I say it’s essential. Like learning a few phrases in Mandarin before my trip to China, this practice will serve me well, and the people I speak to will be more comfortable with me and our conversation.
Speaking in the wrong language, be it English to Chinese, boldness to the circumspect, yes-talk to cynics, or loquaciousness to stoics, results in misunderstandings and missed opportunities.
Charismatic communication is understanding and adaptation. It eschews judgment and works within the framework presented.
It takes excellent listening skills, patience, and practice, and all are rewarded.
