Why is the doctor paid more than the gravedigger, the accountant more than the dog walker, and the entrepreneur more than the warehouse person?

VALUE.

I was sitting with a wonderful group of young people working hard in their new social media marketing firm, Digital Presence.  We discussed AI and the futuristic idea of employing robots instead of trash collectors, burger flippers, and more.  That brought us around to value.  What value do you bring to the marketplace?  The marketplace is a great litmus test for worth.  The skill you bring, your uniqueness, and the ease of replacing you determine your value - TO THE MARKETPLACE.

St Augustine said, and I paraphrase, Man travels hundreds of miles to gaze in wonderment at the beauty of the oceans, mountains, forests, and stars.  He marvels in amazement at what God has created, then passes himself by without a glance, God’s greatest creation.”

You were marvelously and wondrously created. There is greatness in you.

The distinction here is the marketplace. I know many wealthy people. Their unique talents brought value—worth gobs of money—to the marketplace. The teacher and the mailman I wrote about a few weeks back are significantly more valuable than a truckload of wealthy but morally bereft people I’ve met, but there’s the rub. Valuable humans are not always of great value to the marketplace.

So, what does this have to do with AI and robots replacing people?

One of the young guys I was sitting with conjectured that the AI takeover would have the positive result of creating people who must now work with thought and heart rather than brawn. He didn’t see laborers as being replaced but rather as being repurposed to use the uniquely human skills robots lack.

If you want to bring value in the age of AI, you’ve got to get good at the one thing AI will never be good at: P2P, human interaction, and connectedness.

This is the skill that ties it all together. Working on these uniquely human skills is essential to bringing value to both the marketplace and your connected world.  Value to the market, your family, and the world—a triple threat if ever there was one.
