#951 NOT the Valedictorian
First of all, let’s take a moment to pay tribute to one of the most outstanding American’s ever to grace the land;
The Great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I was speaking with two clients about hiring. We talked about the skills we wanted in a hire, and I gave them my hiring philosophy mantra; Hire Heart, Train Skills.
I remember being at a high school graduation party many years ago. Another 17-year-old graduate grabbed me and pointed out the valedictorian of the class with this commentary: “That’s Veena. She’s like going to Harvard. She got most likely to succeed in the yearbook and got like, a million on her SAT’s.”
It struck me that Veena was voted most likely to succeed based on her test scores and grades. I may be biased, but I’ll put my money for success in life on whoever won Best Personality.
I have a strong belief that great people skills will do more for your bank balance than any other set of skills you can learn.
Social skills, communication skills, character or personality traits, attitudes, social and emotional intelligence are tougher to measure but are immeasurably valuable.
Hire slowly as you assess an applicant for these skills and fire quickly when their lack is evident.
I’m looking for someone with great people skills for a sales position selling software for a client of mine in life sciences. If you know someone you think maybe a fit, please connect us.
