I dedicate today’s blog to the inimitable Damian Purves! First, I know he can translate the title, and second because he has been a good friend and an enormous help to me throughout the years.
You know, it’s the start that stops most people.
And what is it that holds us back from the beginning? Too often, it is the fear of getting it wrong. The fear of a bad outcome. The feeling that we need to prepare more or know more before starting.
I love the forgiving attitude embedded in this lovely Italian saying. Devi spagliare se vuoi imparare. You have to make a mistake if you want to learn.
The start that stops most people in my mind is fear of failure.
Failure isn’t failure unless you quit. As the saying goes, “You’ve gotta kiss a lot of frogs….”
I’m not advocating carelessness, but for me, Ready, Fire, Aim. Beats Ready Aim, Aim, Aim…every time. Getting it done is often better than getting it done perfectly.
For example, in selling, the list won’t be perfect, the script will be off, the timing may stink, and the offer might be misunderstood, but you’ve got to make the calls to learn that. Devi spagliare se vuoi imparare.
It is trial and error that builds excellent outcomes.
It is the A/B testing that shows evidence of good results. Fear of getting it wrong becomes anxiety that it STILL isn’t done.
If you have an offer to make, make it. Then measure the feedback, adjust and make it again, rinse and repeat. Nothing gets it done like doing it, and nothing gets it right like doing it wrong.
